In 2019, emissions covered by the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) recorded their largest reduction to date, falling by 9.1% (or 152 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) compared to 2018. This is mainly due to lower emissions from the electricity sector (almost 15%, thanks to the gradual replacement of coal-fired electricity). In total, emissions have been reduced by 24% compared to their 1990 levels.
